![]() "I had a subscription to Bride's magazine when I was 14," says designer Sara Doherty She laughs self-consciously, because she thinks it makes her sound a bit boy-crazy, but that's not it at all. "I just love weddings, everything about them: the colors, fabrics, styles, trends. It's so interesting to see the different choices people make to celebrate this event. As an invitation artist, I find weddings to be incredibly rich creative opportunities, because I get to work with so many materials and ideas, and because they are such special events." Doherty says designing
invitations give her the opportunity to blend images and emotions, and
lets her tap into her backgrounds as a fine artist and as a graphic
designer. With an arts degree from a small Midwestern college,
Doherty began her career in graphic design, creating corporate magazines
and print materials. But she missed the creative freedom she
experienced as a student of painting, weaving, and drawing. When
she created invitations for her own wedding and those of friends, she
reached back into her past to reconnect with that girl who loved
weddings, and realized that as an artist, she'd discovered the perfect
medium. January 2006 Update |
